Vagabond Hostel attracts eclectic characters to a location within a five-minute stroll of downtown Thong Sala and the same-named beach.
With stickers, maps, party posters, guitars, photos of real live vagabonds, a good sound system pumping punk rock and a few cushioned chairs, the little lobby feels like an underground Indie record shop. Guests gather at a few tables set out front or in the neighbouring restaurant and bar set under a pavilion with an open front.
Dorms come with 14 or six beds, both air-con and relying on clean hot-water bathrooms. While the rooms are clean and bunks comfy enough, they do pack them in tight and individual electrical outlets are not provided, so you’ll need to have a communal spirit. The bunks are usually dirt-cheap, which is typical on Pha Ngan, until the Full Moon Party when rates soar to 1,000 baht per night, per bunk, with a minimum of three nights.
A crew of young foreigners runs the hostel; we spoke with an American woman and a European man, and both were as laid back as you’d expect at a place called Vagabond. The nearby Wanderlust Hostel has a similar vibe while Blessing Backpackers is quieter and more homely – both offer dorms for roughly the same rates. You also might like The Nomad House located further east towards Ban Tai, or the Slumber Party if you’re looking for more of a beer-pong-style party hostel. Further east in Baan Tai, Infinity Beach Club and Blue Dream are larger hostels with swimming pools and lots of activities.
