Towards the west end of Ao Thong Sala, Sabaii Bay has a wide selection of rooms that will suit backpackers looking for a touch of luxury, as well as older travellers and families after an affordable beach holiday.

Though the seaside property is quite large, Sabaii Bay has the look and vibe of a smaller family-run resort. The cheapest options are fan-cooled bungalows with concrete walls that become bamboo two thirds of the way up before reaching up to high thatch roofs. These are the oldest rooms, built by a previous owner; their venerable age secured them a location within a few steps of the sand. Inside you get decent beds with mosquito nets on hardwood floors, ensuite hot-water bathrooms and wide glass entrances opening to sea-view terraces.

The least expensive air-con rooms are also very inviting, with hardwood walls and spacious bathrooms. We also dug the newer superior bungalows made of brushed concrete with big rattan hammocks on the porches and extras like fridge, safe and desk. Windows were intelligently placed on the sides so that you can let in a breeze without displaying yourself to the outside, and we also dug a silver elephant print placed above the thick mattress on a raised platform. Deluxe rooms come in a two-storey building with more space, big private terraces and a sleek design, all for the same price as a superior bungalow.

The resort’s focal point is a fairly large infinity pool situated just off the beach. There’s also a large restaurant and bar run by an efficient group of staffers, and WiFi is free. The receptionist greeted us with a smile and offered to show us rooms before we even asked. This shows that she takes pride in the resort – and rightfully so.
