Salad Hut

At one stage in the early 90s Salad Hut had half the beach while My Way had the other half and Salad Hut was always the slightly pricier and better presented option of the two, a distinction which remains accurate today.

If you're a travelling family heading to Haad Salad, Salad Hut should be right up towards the top of your short list and you'll be wanting to book early as they do not have a lot of rooms, so it fills up fast. Dark and wooden, rooms are oversized, with plenty of space for an extra bed – the friendly and helpful staffer who showed us around mentioned that guests often put two extra beds in for bigger families – and quite a few of the rooms come with two double beds as standard.

The hot water bathrooms are modern and clean, beds are firm and with white linens with air-con and WiFi being standard. Rooms have recliner on their large decks, though no hammocks. With the exception of the beachfront rooms, all the rooms are available both as air-con or fan-cooled – they just charge more to hand over the air-con remote.

Most of the rooms are clustered around the wood decked, palm-shaded beachside pool which looks out over the beach. The pool was looking a bit long in the tooth when we dropped by in mid-2016 and its deck really needs to be replaced, but there is an ocean out front and plenty of sand, so this isn't an insurmountable issue – though it is probably why we saw few guests at the pool.

The attached beachfront restaurant is popular and has a comprehensive menu that goes well beyond bog standard bungalow food with an expansive Thai section done to good taste. The restaurant doubles as reception and also has a sizeable book swap and a pool table within.

If Salad Hut fits with your budget and you're travelling with kids, it represents solid value and is our number one family recommendation on Haad Salad. For something more resorty, consider the nearby Salad Buri, or, if you don't mind the climb up the hill (and the small pool), take a look at Cookies.
