Nicely done cliff-side resort
Built over the headland that towers above the south end of Chaweng Noi Beach, The Kala features great views and an interesting network of common decks and walkways placed over rocks beside the sea.
The cheapest rooms are set in a three-story polished concrete building over a steep incline -- construction must have been no small feet of engineering -- while the higher-end rooms come in freestanding villas on thick concrete stilts over granite boulders. Bali-style roofs crown every building, their pointed tops adding a flare of the exotic to the sea views afforded from the terraces fronting every room. Tasteful interiors include smooth wood floors, rattan shades, silk accents and all expected amenities. Rates are reasonable for the standard and the rooms are spacious, with Jacuzzi tubs and rain showers in bathrooms that open up with shutters to the bedrooms. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows front the two-storey pool villas with personal infinity pools down below -- these are fantastic honeymooning fare.
The resort offers a restaurant, coffee shop, bar, spa and narrow but nicely formed dark-tile infinity pool, all with a view of the azure-blue sea. Continue down the marble steps -- and we hope you like steps if you stay here -- to reach large wood decks with loungers set over the rocks. There’s no beach directly in front the resort, but a sandy cove is situated a smidge to the north and we noticed people kayaking and snorkelling there. Reception staff did a good job with us despite dealing with a group that had just arrived for a wedding.
As with The Jungle Club, the views that make The Kala special also mean that it’s not the most convenient spot. Whether coming from Chaweng to the north or Lamai in the south, to get here you’ll need to cruise uphill along the busy ring road and pull into the parking lot at the top of a hill -- we rode by twice and missed the entrance because we were so focused on the road. Pulling out can be hairy, with traffic coming up blind inclines on either side. The concierge is happy to arrange taxis if you’re not into renting a vehicle.
