Ko Samui is a small enough island that there is really little reason to stay in the island’s capital of Nathon, but if, for whatever reason, you do need to stay here, the Grand View Beach Resortel is a reasonable flashpacker option.

Staff told us the hotel is the biggest in Nathon, and the location is great, at the southern extent of the Nathon loop road facing over a moderately sized swimming pool to the beach and ocean beyond. The beach is good for walking – there were a few beached fishing boats just south of here that were interesting to poke around – but we wouldn’t be doing too much swimming here as it is a bit rocky, with some refuse floating around. They do have a beach bar and, as in the hotel proper, we found the staff to be very friendly.

Inside, this is a typical midrange Thai hotel. Ceilings are a little low, but the rooms are clean and well sized. The deluxe rooms are better appointed and despite all facing the ocean, some have better views than others, so if your room doesn’t have windows the whole way along, ask to see another room. Beds are firm, all rooms are air-con with hot water bathrooms, TV, fridge, safe and free WiFi. There is nothing wrong with the Grand Sea View and if it fits your budget, it is fine for a night – we would say the deluxe rooms are worth the extra money for the ocean views.

If you’re looking for somewhere a bit cheaper, Jinta City View is just down the beachfront road from here and also has a (not very appealing) swimming pool with some decent basic air-con rooms way back at the rear of the property, so they are fairly quiet, for 600 baht. A further option, if you don’t mind being off the beach, is Nathon Residence, which has smart, modern air-con rooms in the centre of town.
