A well-rounded resort
Sairee Cottage tries to please everyone from divers to backpackers who are happy with basic bungalows up to well-heeled travellers seeking a luxurious beachside villa or deluxe room by the pool – and it pulls it off nicely.
On a busy day we received patient service at reception, which is notable on a beach where jaded and rude resort staffers are common. The priciest rooms are large Thai-style wood villas set on stilts over the sand, steps from the surf. These bag you hardwood floors, air-con, coffee/tea facilities, cable TVs, fridges and lots of space, including on seaside terraces with chairs and hammocks.
More cash could get you a “white room” with glossy tile floors and brushed concrete accents set in a two-storey building next to the medium-size swimming pool – that’s in addition to another pool used for diving lessons. Head further back on the large and leafy inland side of the property to find clean wood-and-bamboo bungalows with fans, woven bamboo walls, screened windows, porches and hot-water wet bathrooms. We also felt that the “pink rooms”, set in an attached single-floor concrete building (it’s not pink), offered good value for air-con, TV, fridge and floral prints for good measure. Each of these also has a private porch. In between is a range of other bungalows with fan or air-con, including several family editions.
Sairee Cottage is one of the larger and more reputable dive operations on Ko Tao, but this is a large resort and guests are not pressured into signing up for diving. The location is excellent: the many bars and restaurants of both Sairee village and the party strip are an easy walk away, but the resort is removed enough from both to keep it reasonably quiet. The nearby Ban’s Diving Resort is another solid large resort offering mainly midrange rooms in three-storey buildings a bit closer to the party strip.
