Though not nearly as good as neighbouring Sivalai, Pawapi Resort struck us as the best out of three midrange resorts that have been built on Ao Wua Nawn since around 2012.

We had a good experience at reception, where a Thai man who spoke fluent English brought us to check out one of the wood-and-concrete bungalows set in two rows facing the sea. While not particularly memorable, it appeared well kept with woven bamboo walls and thatch roofs for that “island ambiance” but also hardwood floors, wide glass windows and comforts like air-con, fridge and kettle. The rather small bathroom had a typical hot-water shower behind a curtain, with a stained-glass basin sink situated just outside the door.

Pawapi also offers larger concrete villas built a little closer to Sivalai. These are comfortable but we noticed some peeling paint and the chunky structures clash with the natural scenery. All rooms are freestanding and equipped with wooden loungers on porches. We’d happily save 1,000 baht for a second-row room with views only partially obstructed. Even then the value is questionable, but the same can be said for all of Muk’s upscale resorts.

Pawapi has a small restaurant, bar and massage sala but no swimming pool or other facilities. Next door, Riviera Resort has bland concrete bungalows with air-con for a little cheaper, while De Tara offers contemporary brushed concrete rooms and “luxury tents” starting at around 3,000 baht a little further down the beach.
