Tucked away beyond a corner of the train station parking lot, My Friend remains a solid option for a comfortable night's sleep.
We'd pass on the ground-floor windowless rooms due to mustiness, but the upper floor rooms are clean, spacious and equipped with tile floors, hot-water wet bathrooms, TVs (though not many English channels), free WiFi that works reasonably well, desks and mini-fridges. Beds are firm but comfortable, with thick blankets. Rooms in one corner of the building receive a fair amount of traffic noise from busy Kan Tang Road, where annoying government-sanctioned songs and announcements blare every morning from 8:00 to 9:00. The ground floor is outfitted with fish tanks, a Chinese shrine and both indoor and outdoor tables where you can enjoy complimentary coffee and tea in the morning. My Friend draws more of a Thai clientele and the staff isn't as helpful as at other places; on our last visit they still hadn't taken down a poster for a Ko Lanta speedboat company that hasn't run for over two years. Still, for a good night's sleep in a good location, this is a fine choice.
