New and modern, budget price
Backpackers and flashpackers will appreciate this sparkling new building and its budget price.
The cavernous lobby unattractively doubles as a parking garage that could fit a fleet of cars and there’s not a stitch of English is spoken, but you can throw down your pack in fresh rooms furnished with modern-Viet style that includes a vanity and small table and chair set. Rooms also come with a window, fridge, TV, air-con, WiFi, fan and a sleek black and white tiled bathroom with hot water shower. We noticed an ashtray in the room and the lingering smell of cigarette smoke in the hallway. We hope this place doesn’t disintegrate quickly like most new local hotels seem to do, as you can’t beat the price and value. Truc Hoang Ha is located a couple blocks north of the wooden church, on the eastern edge of town, still within walking distance of the centre.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
