Ana Mandara Villas Dalat Resort & Spa is a retreat within the city, hearkening back to the days when French Indochina colonialists sought out Da Lat as a highland holiday haven. Located in a pocket of greenery, beautiful gardens and pines, guests are whisked back to the early 20th century.

In the common room, curl up by the fire on a cold Da Lat night.

Curl up by the fire on a cold Da Lat night in the common room.

Cobblestone pathways lead through the impressive grounds to French villas that contain three different kinds of rooms – a villa room, studio and suite – plus a cosy shared common living room with sofas and a fireplace that can be lit in the evening. Expect more of a cottage than a castle – the buildings do show their age and have rustic touches such as weathered shutters and stone foundations creeping with moss, but this is part of the charm. A flashy city hotel this is not.

Cosy cottage.

Rustic charm.

Rooms are imbued with classic elegance: cream coloured walls, rosewood furniture, a bed draped in mosquito netting and terracotta tile floors. Fabrics in neutral tones with soft peach accents keep everything sunny. If you need a reality check from the French fairy tale, rooms do have WiFi and a flatscreen TV but no air-con — it’s not required at all. Just open the large French windows that face the flower-filled garden. When it’s time for privacy, pull the blinds and curtains.

Just sit there and look at pretty.

Bathrooms are as you would expect, with pedestal sinks, vintage fixtures and a clawfoot freestanding tub. Toiletries and white terry bathrobes complete the spa feel.

The property facilities include a bar, swimming pool, gym, kids’ club, spa and a restaurant with a beautiful outdoor dining terrace surrounded by, you guessed it, more greenery.

Ana Mandara is the most refined and upscale international hotel in the Da Lat city centre, only two kilometres from the central market. For such a standard, the room rates are very reasonable and we noticed some deep discounts off the rack rate during low season – check online booking sites. It’s a quiet, relaxed getaway with fresh air, and that is what Da Lat is really all about.
