Garden hotel close to old town
Set at the eastern edge of Hoi An, the Ha An is one of the better hotels within close proximity to the historic town.
Set around a manicured garden, the two-storey buildings are designed to look like an old Hoi An shop house. Inside though, the interiors are tidy and modern Vietnamese, with tile floor, plain wood furniture and amenities such as flatscreen TV, fridge, kettle, air-con, WiFi and a functional bathroom. The rooms with the terrace facing the garden are very pleasant. The courtyard also has a billiard table and hammocks. Bicycle and breakfast are included.
There’s nothing wrong with the room and it is an intimate setting, but it is expensive for what you get. We’d expect it to be more stylish for the price, which we suspect is inflated given its location, its proximity to the river and the heritage feel of the surrounding buildings. If you’re comparison shopping for value and the actual rooms, you may want to consider less expensive Lantana on the opposite side of town, though Lantana doesn’t have the old town setting.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
