A good guesthouse
Located a few steps down a small lane just off main Highway QL1, Thai Son is a guesthouse yards above any other budget accommodation in Dong Ha.
New, bright and cosy, this family-owned joint features decently sized rooms with extras such as air-con, fan, mini-fridge, flatscreen TV and big windows that let in natural light (and curtains if you don’t want it). Rooms have a few pieces of furniture such as desk and sitting area. Backpackers will appreciate the clean tile bathrooms with hot water shower. This is a hotel catering to Vietnamese so we did notice ashtrays in the room, but we didn’t detect cigarette odour like so many other depressing, yellowed, crummy Dong Ha hotels we inspected. Thai Son wouldn’t be a remarkable budget place in any other city but for Dong Ha, it’s cheerful and exceptional. Thai Son Hotel is located on a lane that runs beside Melody Hotel, which itself is on the main highway. No English is spoken.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
