While luxury may be overstating it, Luxury Backpackers does indeed offer comfortable and stylish dorms and private rooms in the Old Quarter’s popular backpacker area.

Just two of the 28 rooms in this 2016-opened hotel are actually dorm rooms, so it’s more of a hotel than a hostel. The stylings are definitely more snazzy than other backpacker joints, and you’re paying a premium for this.

We booked a superior room but were upgraded to a spacious deluxe. Most notably its bathroom is attached via a glass wall. While not for modest couples, the feature certainly creates more of a sense of space in the room. Decor is light and airy, with whitewashed brick walls, arty photos, tasteful lamps and comfortable white-linen beds with accent cushions and a throw. Flatscreen TVs, a phone to order room service or call reception (not outside the hotel), cupboard, small working desk and tea- and coffee-making facilities round out the offerings. Keycards are provided to access the rooms, with a $10 charge if you lose yours.

We were able to quickly peek in a dorm when the cleaners had the doors open. More stylish than Hanoi’s usual strict budget offerings, bunks run along the walls train style, with modesty curtains for privacy, shelving and hooks (we didn’t see power outlets though they could have been there) plus lockers. A smoking space is provided, which could prove annoying if your room is nearby, but we didn’t have any problems (other than a water bottle filled with butts falling off the window pane when we opened our own window).

Breakfast is included from 07:00 to 09:30 only, but so much street food is nearby we skipped it—it could have been perfectly fine, but we couldn’t risk average eggs when so much divine stuff is for the taking elsewhere. We liked the full menu provided in the room for room service ordered up from the kitchen on the ground floor featuring a range of reasonably priced Indonesian and Western dishes, such as fried rice with chicken or spring rolls (each 45,000 dong). The stand at the front of the hotel does a mean banh mi, too.

Our room looked out over buildings towards the back of the hotel and was quiet, with some noise echoing through the stairwell; we’d expect a little more noise again in the front rooms. There’s no elevator, so be prepared to hike up a few flights of stairs to get to your room.

Staff were friendly, but were sitting around drinking when we checked in early in the evening. We don’t have the slightest problem with staff having a night off, but when we came back later that night to get back into our room, the staff member manning the front desk to give us our key could barely speak he was so drunk. The same staff member seemed to take forever to check us out the next morning. We knocked off a point for this, as it could have been a one-off bad night and day; otherwise our stay was smooth, but this did leave a sour taste in our mouths considering the price of the rooms.
