Nexy is a funky, immaculate hostel offering dorms as well as compact private rooms in a good Hoan Kiem location, with friendly, professional staff giving them an edge over other hostels in town.

The vibe at Nexy is sunny and colourful, with playful murals lifting the atmosphere to the next level. Dorms come in 14- or eight-bed flavours, mixed or female only, with double bunks running parallel to walls, modesty curtains and lockers under the bottom bunks. We didn’t get to see them, but we stayed in "Moving Sand Dunes", a twin room with private bathroom.

This was actually the smallest room we stayed in of a six-hotel stay in Hanoi, and though bright and cheerful, with industrial-style fittings, comfortable beds and pristine bathroom, we wouldn’t have wanted to hang out in here too long just because of the size. While we could have hung out in the lounge chair, there was no desk for working at, either. Luckily though a social common room on the top (seventh) floor is offered, plus there’s a small balcony to enjoy the excellent views from; we ran into another guest here quietly reading, while one sat inside watching TV on the three-tiered lounge.

The dorms are definitely what we’d go for at Nexy, as the rooms, while gleaming and stylish, are not the best value in Hanoi. Dorms are competitively priced though, especially considering the helpful front desk and decent facilities on offer elsewhere in the hostel.

WiFi is offered throughout the hostel, and when we had problems connecting at 22:00 on our stay, the friendly manager determinedly worked to fix it and didn’t give up till it was operational 30 minutes or so later. This can-do attitude filters through to all the staff we encountered, including the member who was eager to help us sort out a taxi to the airport on our departure.

A super-basic breakfast of cereal, toast, fruit, tea, coffee and juice is on offer in the pleasant but windowless dining area, and the ground-floor bar looks like a good spot to socialise during the evening. Front desk is open 24 hours but check-in is a slightly late 15:00. Housekeeping is only every three days.

Nexy’s location is excellent too—just a three-minute walk to the north of Hoan Kiem Lake, with some great street food and shopping in the immediate surrounds.

We’d go for Immaculatefor more bells and whistles, or superior at Luxury Backpackers if we want a more social atmosphere, but for even more space, though a notch down on the style front, Joseph’s is great value and also well located.
