Location, location, location. Phong Vu’s rooms are basic but the oceanfront location is the draw. For now it is Nam Du island’s only accommodation where you can swim two metres from your door.

Located on the south east coast, four kilometres south of the main village/pier, Phong Vu is a single concrete cottage with nine rooms facing the ocean. Rooms are simple affairs with a few handy touches such as a mirror, hooks and a fan above the bed.

No swimming pool but...

No swimming pool but…

Like most accommodation we saw on Nam Du and Lai Son, the bed is a raised platform made of concrete and tile topped with a hard mattress, pillow and linens. Bring your own toilet paper, towel and torch, and a sarong is handy to use as a sleep sheet.

What a spot.

What a spot.

Phong Vu has a generator which means you can use the light, fan and electrical outlet at night, after island electricity has shut off. It’s also fairly secure, with a door that locks and security bars on the window so you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze and be lulled by the water gently lapping up on shore.

All you need.

All you need.

In the ensuite bathroom you get a Western toilet, towel rack, sink and your choice between a cold shower or bucket shower. Though this is a budget place, the building was new so we were disappointed to see our sink in disrepair and falling of the wall and that despite some effort (they made up the bed and mopped the floor when we arrived), everything could have been a bit cleaner.

Find your happy place.

Find your happy place.

Still, beggars can’t be choosers and this is one of Nam Du’s best with a great price for the location. The shore is rocky yet still lovely for swimming once you get out far enough. And being east facing, early risers can anticipate a beautiful sunrise.

Good morning world.

Good morning world.

The people running the place bent over backwards to help us and were extremely hospitable, taking us around the island and bringing us to and from the pier for free. We asked for meals and they arranged a quick, tasty, inexpensive lunch and breakfast, and they invited us for an awesome seafood barbecue dinner feast (complete with karaoke) right on the rocks in front of our room. Giant crabs, clams, mussels, squid, scallops, seafood rice soup – it was delicious and memorable, and cost us a mere 80,000 dong. We sponsored the case of beer.

Beach barbecue delight.

The art of the beach barbecue.

As this is new coverage for Travelfish and with so little practical information available about the island, we arrived armed only with the name of the guesthouse. As we disembarked the ferry we showed someone (who didn’t speak English) the name. There was a lot of discussion among the crowd, some charades and we were told to wait on the pier. Fate would have it someone from Phong Vu was also on the boat and they took us there. It’s a small island, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding someone to give you a lift on a motorbike. If you’re not too keen on the “show up and see what happens” approach, contact them to arrange to be met at the boat.
