You’d think that a dorm resembling an enormous storage shed (concrete walls, high corrugated metal ceiling) would be soulless, but there’s a surprising amount of spunk and charm in those on offer at Lanchia.

the waterways first hand. From U$25
The concrete walls are a canvas for colourful guest scribbles and a stripped down tree in the middle doubles as a communal clothes rack. One dorm has 20 beds, the other 10 and both feature solid wood bunks, each bed coming with their own mosquito net and side table. While the 20-bed dorm sounds like a nightmare for light sleepers, on the plus side the room is huge and the bunks spaced out, giving you plenty of area to spread out your pack. A low concrete wall through the middle offers a little bit of privacy, while the roof raised off the wall allows for air circulation with the help of some fans. The metal lockers are big enough to fit your laptop, camera and other small valuables. Yes, there’s WiFi.
One thing that struck us was how clean the place was. Even with the place fully booked and clothes strewn everywhere, the terracotta tile floors (which, by the way, have a natural cooling effect) were dirt free.
For those who want privacy while enjoying the hostel’s lively atmosphere – Langchia is also a bar complete with pool table and foosball – the private fan rooms are small and plain but have what a basic backpacker needs. Rooms have enough space for a thin mattress, mosquito net and an ensuite bathroom with contemporary fixtures, a rain showerhead and sink with countertop. You can get better value elsewhere for a private room but this place is about socialising, less about finery. However, the bathroom opens to your own wooden deck overlooking a small swimming pool, a bonus for a hostel.
Langchia Hostel is on the main road Tran Hung Dao, a short walk to Long Beach which you can conveniently access through neighbouring Moon Resort. It’s an upbeat place with friendly staff and the front outdoor patio, normally buzzing at night, is a great place to meet people. The hostel also runs a popular boat trip which is a good deal at $25, drinks included.
