Location and views
Seven storey Song Tien Annex’s exterior is grim and utilitarian, however, the hotel does have some redeeming qualities, the interesting location and the view it affords being the main ones.
Song Tien Annex is located 600 m east of the tourist boat pier, on the Bao Dinh Canal just north of where it meets the Mekong. It’s not to be confused with sister property Song Tien Hotel a couple blocks north of it on the canal. An outdoor corridor to the room doors wraps around the building, meaning you get a vantage over the busy happenings of the local ferry pier on the canal, boats loaded up with people chugging along past the homes perched along the waterway. The higher up you go, the more view to the Mekong you get which is part of the reason why rooms on the 3rd to 6th floor cost more. The other reason is street noise—stay on the upper floor to reduce the noise.
The immediate area around the hotel is more gritty than charming and a relaxing balcony this is not, but pausing on the corridor to watch the activity is one way to kill some time. Another way is to visit the central market in the morning, a must for anyone staying overnight in My Tho. Song Tien Annex is just 400 m south of it.
Rooms are surprisingly well furnished and are definitely more recent than the building itself. They have laminate floors, wooden furniture including a luggage bench, bureau with mirror and bedside table, as well as bedside plug, air-con, kettle, WiFi and windows. The oversized bathroom boasts a big countertop, towel rack and a hot water shower head awkwardly over a freestanding tub without shower curtain. Rate includes a simple breakfast.
Overall Song Tien Annex is ok for a night and it is slightly cheaper than Minh Quan, on the riverfront just around the corner. Like all My Tho hotels, the rate is higher than it should be and English is limited. Flashpackers would probably be happier at The World Hotel and even factoring in the cost of taxi, you could still save a few dollars there.
