Few travellers linger in My Tho, yet The Island Lodge may just be the perfect excuse to—if you can afford it.
Located on the quiet western tip of Thoi Son (Unicorn) Island—one of the islands that gets overwhelmed by boat loads of people on Mekong Delta day trips from Ho Chi Minh City—the boutique lodge is an idyllic base for deeper exploration.
Shrouded by a manicured tropical garden, with frangipani and the Mekong Delta’s signature palms, the property boasts an elegant, open air main reception/restaurant/bar pavilion, a spa and just 12 rooms. It comes as no surprise that The Island Lodge is French-owned. It’s reminiscent of many other boutique lodges with a French connection ensconced in locations around Indochina like La Folie Lodge, Muang La Resort and Riverside Boutique Resort, imbued with a similar refined aesthetic of natural materials, a swimming pool and river views.
Choose from either the rooms on the upper floor of the main building or a bungalow in the garden. The garden bungalow is slightly larger, has a bathtub, more privacy and space for kids to run around, while the rooms have their own balcony with vantage over the pool and Mekong. Glass balcony doors mean the view can be enjoyed from the bed, even with open doors as the bed has a mosquito net. All rooms are equipped with tea/coffee and kettle, unobtrusive flatscreen TV, desk, WiFi, fresh fruit, drinking water and air-con.
The service is excellent. The receptionist who showed us (an anonymous visitor) the property couldn’t have been kinder or more professional and helpful. A two-night stay is recommended so there is enough time for a tour, which can be arranged through the hotel or done independently if you have your own bicycle or motorbike. It would be a pleasure to simply drive around the rural lanes of the small island and to relax on the lodge’s terrace and pavilion on the Mekong—the view doesn’t get any better than this.
Though the majority of visitors to My Tho arrive and explore the islands by boat, Thoi Son island is actually connected to the mainland by an enormous bridge between My Tho and Ben Tre. Therefore The Island Lodge is accessible by road. Boat is of course also an option, as the property has its own pier, which high end tour operators offering overnight packages will use. For now, The Island Lodge is My Tho’s most luxurious accommodation option.
The Island Lodge offers a quiet side to My Tho’s mass tourism machine. It’s also a good option for those in Ho Chi Minh City needing a weekend escape. Breakfast is included in the rate. Shop around online for a competitive rate.
