A rural family homestay
The Pepper House is a beautiful family homestay run by Dave and Diem in the heart of rural Phong Nha.
The three rooms are in solidly built cottages surrounding a central pool. High ceilings and white walls give a lightness and though very sparsely furnished, there are some elegant touches such as French doors and bamboo light fixtures. Air-con and WiFi are also there if you need it. The bathroom is a mix of modern and, well...primitive. Everything about the bathroom is modern except for the compost toilet – these guys care about their environment! It’s a regular Western toilet seat but essentially a hole in the ground and yes, there can be a bit of an odour. Perhaps you can overlook it when considering the hot shower has two types of showerheads and the fact that you are surrounded by the quiet life of rice paddies and pepper plants. Beers are cold and the food is fantastic. The homestay also has free bikes.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
