C-Central De Tham

C-Central De Tham

One of Pham Ngu Lao’s best

More on Ho Chi Minh City

If you want to get a glimpse of the future of Pham Ngu Lao, look no further than C-Central Hotel De Tham, a chic boutique hotel right on the corner of Pham Ngu Lao’s iconic intersection anchored by Crazy Buffalo Bar.

Travelfish says:

Like Khao San Road in Bangkok, the traditional backpacker hub is gentrifying and opening up to other markets. C-Central is clearly leading the way, taking over and renovating an existing skinny hotel building into a fashionable, comfortable respite and turning small rooms into smart abodes using bright lighting and custom furniture.

C-Central De Tham has four room categories (32 rooms across 10 floors). Rooms feature a minibar, kettle, safety box, flatscreen TV, air-con, WiFi, desk/vanity and ensuite bathroom that sports both a large tub and separate glass shower stall with regular and rain shower head. Decor-wise, it is conservative though there are a few stylish touches—in one room there is an attractive cutout wood headboard that doubles as an artistic focal point.

“Smart” rooms will appeal to the savvy traveller who wants to splurge on some boutique hotel comforts. The small room has been given the hotel treatment, the amenities packed into the compact space. It is best suited for one person, or two people who are very comfortable with each other. There is no one bathroom, just a separate shower and toilet in the wall concealed by frosted doors.

A sister property C-Central Bui Vien is just around the corner and it was difficult to choose which to review as both have comparable rooms and the same jump-up-to-help-you type of service. Both have steps from the main entrance to reach the lobby/lift. C-Central Hotel De Tham has a restaurant on the lower level and an impressionable black and white lobby with reception, while C-Central Bui Vien only has a small waiting area and service desk. Bui Vien also has just two room categories: large and extra-large.

Whatever you choose, C-Central is where modern travellers with less restrictive budgets should stay in Pham Ngu Lao.

After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
