Smart boutique city hotel
Characterful and fresh, Emm Hotel is a smart boutique city hotel that offers terrific value for the modern traveller who wants a comfortable room at a mid-range price.
It’s amazing how something as simple as white walls with a few splashes of vibrant colours can make the difference between a bland hotel and something memorable. Emm Hotel uses this philosophy, pairing an uncluttered aesthetic with bold accents, as evidenced by the airy, bright lobby of white, grey, lime green and magenta.
The palette continues in the superior rooms, which are our favourite. These are the ones to snag—there are just 12 compared to the 44 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The rooms are smart (we can’t repeat that word enough). It’s the little things like bedside plugs and switches, a desk with lamp, built in luggage rack and minibar with kettle and tea/coffee, wall mounted flat screen TV and WiFi. The bathroom is kitted with toiletries, the sink has a countertop and the shower has both a regular and rain shower head.
The apartments would appeal to families or longer stays as it’s almost too much space for a traveller there for one or two nights. There’s a kitchenette with full sized fridge, living area with sofa and functional bedroom.
Extra perks include free laundry facilities (simply pay for washing powder), a 24-hour gym with a decent range of equipment, a restaurant popular with the lunchtime crowd and breakfast. For now, there are no adjacent tall buildings to obstruct the views from the windows.
Emm Hotel is located in District 3, only a kilometre north of Notre Dame Cathedral and the start of the downtown core. It’s ideal for those who want to stay in a less busy part of the city centre while being only an inexpensive taxi ride to District 1’s tourist sites. We noticed significant discounts on online booking sites during low season.

In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
