If you’re looking for a neat and orderly hostel experience, this is the place for you. Newly renovated (as of 2015) Tabalo Hostel reminds us of a few pod flashpacker hostels in Singapore, where space is small but everything is so smartly designed that you have everything you need.

An air-con lounge, a must in Nha Trang.

Tabalo’s cabins are similar to a train berth, and each cabin contains two to four comfy beds – upper and lower — with soft linens and a quality pillow. Your sleeper also comes with a reading light, a long shelf and a big backpack sized-locker. Everything is fresh, clean and in good working order. And this is also the most secure hostel we’ve seen in Nha Trang; access to the room is by key card.

Bed, plug, pack - all a flashpacker needs

The sparkling clean bathrooms are a backpacker’s dream. There are four individual showers, separate toilet stalls, big mirrors and many sinks – no having to wait for someone to finish taking a shower to use the loo, the pitfall of many wet-room style shower/toilet combos you find in Southeast Asia hostels. Some of the dorms are also female-only.

If there were Nha Trang Hostel Awards, Tabalo would win best shower.

For those in need of privacy, one of the seven floors is devoted to awesome private rooms that come with ensuite bathrooms, flatscreen TV and beds perched in a loft, with wardrobe and storage furniture doubling as stairs. The deluxe triple and quad even have a small living area underneath the loft, with a TV and armchair.

A sign of a good time.

The hostel’s motto is “the more the merrier” but you really wouldn’t want any more people in your room — they are very small, with every square inch squeezed out of them. Hopefully you get along with your cabin mate (and hopefully this person isn’t smelly) because there’s nowhere to hide. You can stretch out your legs in the air-con lobby lounge. The staff are friendly and helpful, cold drinks are for sale, and a TV and free computers are available to use. The walls double as a guest book. The rate includes WiFi and a good breakfast.

Cozy digs, good price

Tabalo Hostel is on a quiet local lane off Nguyen Thien Thuat, south of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. This place is slick and cute – maybe too cute for some. It’s not impossible to meet others here but if you’re looking for scruffy backpacker charm and a party, you’re better off staying at True Friends Inn, HQ Cafe Hotel or iHome Nha Trang. But like those hostels, you are close to the bars and restaurants and a 15-minute stroll to the beach.
