Hon Co Ca Na Resort is a surprising and puzzling find in a town that is more like a truck stop than a beach holiday destination.

The resort is your typical Vietnamese tour series resort, built to cater to tour groups, completely dead and empty in the day until once in a while, a bus rolls in late at night.

The well-lit deluxe rooms are new, rather swank and well appointed with typical hotel furniture including bedside tables with plugs, desk/vanity, luggage rack and chair on the terrace. The beds are very comfortable, the linens soft and clean. Guests also get upscale amenities such as a safety box, minibar, flatscreen TV, kettle, WiFi, air-con and a giant bathroom with hot shower and good water pressure. The standard rooms, at half the price, resemble your typical budget hotel room and aside from air-con, TV and fridge, have none of the finery.

Hon Co Ca Na Resort has its own beach, and one part of it is dramatically studded with boulders and the water is exceptionally clear and blue – so clear that you can see the bits of rubbish at the bottom. C’est la vie in Vietnam. On the upside, you will likely have this beach all to yourself. When we stayed here, all the entry level rooms were full yet we didn’t see a single soul all day until the Pegas Touristik Russian tour bus steamrolled in at dark for dinner before leaving as abruptly as they arrived.

There’s a decent restaurant on site, pretty gardens and scant service. No English is spoken. Breakfast is your standard mediocre Vietnamese resort buffet, though they do offer fresh fruit, rice soup, noodle soup and eggs. Overall, Hon Co Ca Na has a decent amount of comfort in such an out of the way place. It’s not exactly the place a backpacker would think worthy of a splurge, and it’s definitely not worth venturing all the way out here just for a stay at the resort. But if you are passing through, have the funds and need something quiet, comfortable and secure, this is your only option in Ca Na.
