Travelfish new site, almost there

Posted by somtam2000 on 6/12/2015 at 07:42 admin

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the new Travelfish, or, well, some of it anyway! It has been a bit of a long and winding road getting here, and we're not quite there yet, but, here we are!

The good news (well, we hope so) is that:
* The new site should be easier to read;
* The content is better organised and centralised around individual destinations;
* The site should be considerably faster;
* The site should render better in phones and tablets;
* There are pretty pics up top (and a lot more to come);
* Maps are new;
* Google ads have gone;
* Affiliate links are marked more clearly -- any link marked with a $ is a link that could potentially earn us a commission, which keeps us in business.

Still to come:
* Photo galleries for each destination;
* Better presented eBook store;
* Book reviews.

The bad news:
* Some sections of the site remain offline. This includes all of the Member Centre. You can log in and post on the forum but that is about it. Getting all of this up and on deck is our number one priority this coming week and we aim to have it all up by Wednesday.
* Everyone needs to reset their password. Just try and log in with your old password and you'll be prompted to reset it. This should be a straightforward process, but if you have trouble getting in, either email me, or drop me a line on Twitter.
* Member RSS feeds and uploaded images have been disabled after we discovered some members were using them to upload porn. Sheesh people!
* The forum is limited in capacity at the moment, so no editing posts and no thread subscription alerts. These should both be up by mid week.

This is still very much a beta-launch. I'll apologise right now for the bugs that you will come across. Please post any bugs or questions that you have to this thread.

Thanks!

Stuart and Sam

I´m sorry Stuart, but I LOVED the old site, the left column with all the destinations in a country was incredible, with the little photos and the short funny descriptions, I miss that.

I'm afraid that I agree with Marksoc. I realise that the site isn't finished, but the new layout actually looks dated...

Sorry for the late replies on this!

@sm thanks!

@marksoc - I think you're talking about two redesigns ago :-) We not list over 700 destinations in the region so can't really fit them all in the left column (especially as there isn;t a left column anymore!

@Tennouji - Thanks for the feedback. We've designed it with a mobile first approach (so it works well on phones, which is how over half the readers now view the site) and so that's limited some of what we've been able to do with it. But, more to come :-)

hey, just a couple of things i noticed today, really like the addition of maps in each destination, would it be possible to have hotels, eateries and transport links over-layed onto the map? also, are the quick-links on the bottom of the profile page necessary?

Hi gecktrek,
Hotels and sights are overlaid -- if we have the latitude and longitude for them. This is a progressive thing as we slowly collect them. You can see an example here for Phu Quoc on the map for there - in that case just the hotels are marked.

Will reduce the size of the quicklinks on the profile pages.

Cheers & apols for slow reply.

There is a bug where forum subscription emails are not being sent - so if you've asked to be notified of replies to a thread, these are currently not being sent. Should be fixed tomorrow.

If people come across other bugs, please let me know.

Cheers & thanks

Stuart

I've been very pleased with the upgrades, and particularly the interactive maps for accommodation and other attractions. They helped me locate places I might not have otherwise found for my next trip to Bangkok in September.

I did notice that some of the forum features of yore aren't as readily available, including the small red box to report posts. Editing posts also doesn't seem to be as obvious as before. Am I missing something? Cheers.

I have a few burning questions about my upcoming trip to Indonesia. I have found your posts and advice on this site great help when travelling through Cambodia and Vietnam last year. I have looked all over the site and have commented on one post, but cannot find where I can add a new topic. It is probably glaringly obvious, so please point me in the right direction,
Many thanks
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

Go to the forum main page here, then scroll down to Indonesia, click. Then you'll see the latest topics, scroll to the end to add a new one.

Maybe I need a button up top to make that clear :-)

Cheers!
