We're five days into launching Travelfish Premium, the new subscription-based membership to Travelfish. Before anything else, thank you. People have jumped at the chance to upgrade. So once again, thank you.
A few questions have come in by email, especially by newer members, asking for more guidance on how to get the most value out of their A$35, hence this post.
I'm going to cover a bit of ground here with a bunch of screenshots to help explain what is going on. Should you have further questions, please ask below.
How to become a normal (free)member
This is required to post on the forum, and is also the first step towards Premium membership.
You can join Travelfish either via the "Join" button at the far right end of the top black toolbar, or, when you see it, the large yellow banner reading "Join now etc". Either way, you end up at the join screen.
Once there, fill in all the fields. Assuming that is all good to go, you'll be sent a "verification email" to the email address you signed up under. You need to click on the link in that email to verify your email address. Once you have done that, you can login and surf the site as a Travelfish member.
Get your free guides
Congratulations, you made it! Before you do anything else, grab your free guides. If you click on the "Guides" tab in the black toolbar, you'll be taken to our guides page. This is a long (and growing) list of all our PDF travel guides. There are 160 as I type this and all but four are for Premium members only.
As a normal member, you can access the four free guides, which are available so you can get an idea of what you'll get with Premium membership. They are a range of small to medium sized guides.
Please make the time to take a look at the free ones before deciding if Premium is for you.
Still reading? Great!
How to upgrade
Once you are logged in, as you surf around the site, if you go to a destination where we have a guide, you'll see an emerald-coloured banner prompting you to upgrade your account. If you click on it, you'll be taken to the upgrade page.
Once there, give the page a read through, so you know what you're getting yourself into!
In summary, the subscription is annual from the day you pay and costs A$35.
Click the button reading "Become a premium member now" and you'll see the following pop-up.
We use Stripe for all payment processing. Stripe looks after the transaction with your bank and we never even see your credit card number – Stripe just lets us know if the transaction worked (Yay!) or failed (No!). The entire transaction is done through an encrypted and secure connection between us and Stripe and Stripe and your bank. For more information, please see the Stripe website here.
If your payment works, you're now a Travelfish Premium member! You should be able to download any guides immediately, either from the Guides page referenced above, or if you're on a page where we have a guide, you'll see a new banner, this time blue, asking you to download the guide. Click on it and the guide will start downloading immediately.
Some of the guides are of a very large file size (40-50 MB). If you're on your phone on an EDGE connection in the boondocks of Cambodia, maybe wait till you are back in your guesthouse before downloading that particular guide.
Premium members are able to turn off Google Adsense ads on the site. You can do so by editing your profile. Note that you will need to log out and log back in after changing that for the ads to vanish. And yes, if you miss them, you can turn them back on!
Premium members also get 50% off our travel planning services. Please see this page for more information on this.
That's about it.

Just an update on this post.
The free membership has been discontinued, meaning any new member needs to pay the membership fee (currently A$35).
Members who were members BEFORE we started charging have the option of continuing to use the site as they always have, OR if they want to access the PDF guides they need to upgrade.
If you have any questions, please pop them in this thread as I will lock this one down.
