Myanmar policys message to Muslims: Get out

This recent New York Times piece highlights how terrible this situation has gotten. Here's the link:

I'm departing today for a long island-hopping trip in the Andaman Sea, and I must say that I won't be able to get thoughts of the human trafficking and slavery that goes on there out of my mind. When I see fishing trawlers, I'll inevitably think that there could be slaves on it. Here's an excellent story from the Guardian on what happens to many of those Rohingya who pay to leave Myanmar by boat:

I'm not trying to persuade people of anything; just spreading awareness of this terrible situation.

Yes, a bleak situation for sure. There's a good chance, too, that you'll be within hiking distance of some of these secret camps, as some have been found on Ko Tarutao and other islands and jungles in Thailand's South. There are few things to cheer about re. the treatment of the Rohingya in Burma and neighbouring countries, but I have been impressed with how one small community in Takuapa, Phang Nga (between Khao Lak and Khao Sok), is defying the "official" policy and trying to do something about the growing human trafficking trade. Good people! One bright spot at least. http://phuketwan.com/tourism/trafficking-rebellion-grows-bangkok-sends-investigators-probe-thailands-trade-boatpeople-21353/
