2 week-ish itinerary for vetting...

Posted by geo_shack on 17/1/2016 at 04:57

Hi folks.

My other half and I will be travelling to Bangkok in Mid April with about two weeks to be spent in Burma. We are away for 3 1/2 weeks in total, but he wants to spend some time in Thailand too, as he's not been before...

We're both late 20's. Not interested in partying but like the odd beer break to punctuate sightseeing! Easygoing travellers...I wouldn't usually worry about an itinerary but just want to make sure most is made of time in Burma with travel time being quite long between cities...don't want to be going back on ourselves.

I've put together a rough itinerary...This would be the 'most rushed' version...scope for adding days here and there/getting sick etc! Any advice/recommendations much appreciated! Despite the horror stories I'm keen to experience the night train from Yangon to Bagan...or is this just stupid? Is Hpa An worth it, or would we be better off crossing overland from Kanchanaburi then spending these two days on beaches around Dawei instead before travelling to Yangon?

Not intending to do the Kalaw-Inle Lake Trek...just straight to Inle Lake.

Day 1- arrive in Bangkok

Day 2 - Night bus to Mar Sot border crossing

Day 3 - Cross border then bus to Hpa - An

Day 4 - Hpa An

Day 5 -Hpa An

Day 6 - Bus to Yangon

Day 7 - Yangon - Night (train or bus?) to Bagan

Day 8 -Bagan

Day 9 -Bagan

Day 10 -Bagan

Day 11 -Morning bus to Inle Lake

Day 12 - Inle Lake

Day 13 - Inle Lake

Day 14 - Fly from Heho to Bangkok.

...Then on to relax in Khao Sok National park and a quiet part of Koh Samui or Phangan (if such a part exists any more...been 10 years since my last visit) ...

Thanks in advance for input!

I just spend a month traveling around Myanmar and I would slow down your pace. I spend 4 days in Hpa An, 5 days in Yangon , 4 days in Bagan and 4 days at Inle Lake. At every town I wished I would have had more time and didn't get to see/experience everything. If you change anything be sure to spend more days in Hpa An, it's an amazing little town with gorgeous countryside and lots of things to do.
About train travel, I took the train from Yangon to Kaityko and it was a wonderful experience. The train ran 1,5 hours late and be prepared for a lot of rocking, I took a motion sickness pil, ut saw plenty of other people get really sick. The chairs in first class were a lot cheaper than a busticket and the chairs a comfortable and with lots of leg space.
