Nyaungshwe to Loikaw

Posted by BreadtagAsia on 5/1/2017 at 06:02

We have just asked the travel agency thu thu in Nyaungshe about boat travel to Loikaw. They say it costs $150 US for a one day trip to Phekon and $200 if you stay overnight. Can one get out of Nyaungshe and then take a public boat to Phekon? Seems excessive and we are in no hurry. We are Australian and with the exchange rate $150 US is a lot of money for us.

The other way seems relatively easy!

Actually -there is a public boat. We took it in the opposite direction (Phekhon to Nyaungshwe)in January 2015 - it was only 10$ a person (+ the 10$ 'Inle Lake' zone tourist fee that you can pay while buying your boat-ticket at the tiny 'pier' in Phekhon). The boat left at 9AM and took 6 hours. It was a very enjoyable day, especially the first 4 hours in the lower area of the lakes - wonderful to seethe local people just going about their days when picking up-dropping off passengers. If you're a traveler that enjoys to travel slow and to observe -instead of hurrying to a destination - you will love it. The closer you get to Nyaungshwe (the last 2 hours), it gets crowded with the day-tour people/boats &a lot less exciting (happy we did not go on one of these tours).

Does anyone have any suggestions? We arrive in Burma on 19 Jan.

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Helvetica; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000}span.s1 {font-kerning: none}To hire a boat will cost 100 USD for two ways, but even it is one way, they charge same price. Take the boat from Nyaung Shwe to Phekon, then take a car to Loikaw , there is nothing at Phekon which is gateway to Loikaw. Car from Phekon to Loikaw costs 40 USD.
