Quickest way from Siem Reap to Perhentian Islands....

Posted by doidgeandpleach on 29/4/2013 at 06:45

I've managed to produce a travel Itinerary for a 6 week stay around Southeast Asia . And now I'm completely stumped. I need to get from Siem Reap to the Perhentian Islands as quickly (and as cheaply) as possible, so that me and my fellow travel partner can spend at least 8 days sunning ourselves and island hopping after a hectic few weeks sight-seeing.
Having looked at some flights, it seems we can get a flight to an airport nearby (Kota Bharu), and then a boat ride to our island of choice. However the flight from Siem Reap seems to have 3 changes?!
In need of some help....

Fly from Siam Reap to Kuala Lumpur , then Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bahru... then a bus/ferry and you're in paradise!

Definitely the best way. Air Asia has cheap flights going everyday from SR to KL!

I hate to ask but why the Perhentians? Why not Kep or something already in Cambodia?

Cambodia only really has 2 island options.

Koh Tonsay by Kep is a nice enough of an island but fairly small and a little boring unless you are only really looking to relax(lay around, swim, read, have massage etc). It also doesn't have dedicated electricity so you are roughing it a bit more then in some other locations.

Koh Rong might fit the bill but I haven't been there personally(heard good things from most people though and know a person who ended up staying for around a month). Larger with more options of things to do.

Both these places require a fair bus ride to get to though and if the op needs to get over to Malaysia for flight home or other reasons then they might not make that much sense over Perhentian Islands.

We're meeting friends in Malaysia for the last leg of our trip, although we could have met up on the Cambodian islands, I've heard a lot of mediocre reviews, lots say they're nothing much to shout about.
Also, we will have spent the last 5 weeks dodging torrential downpours in most places in Southeast Asia, whereas we have a little more chance of sun in Malaysia :)
