Christmas in Cambodia ?

Posted by JinkStudio on 30/8/2013 at 11:10

Any advice or thoughts on spending Christmas in Cambodia? I would like it to feel as non Christmassy as possible and would like to be on a nice beach but with other stuff to do inland as well. Have heard Sihanoukville beaches are nice any thoughts or other recommendation?

Thanks in advance James

WTF is that all about? Not exactly on topic.

Anyway nobody else is answering so I'll throw in my experience. I'm not a great lover of an over-commercialised Xmas so I enjoyed my Xmases in Cambodia.
One in Phnom Penh when I didn't even realise it was Xmas until the girl in the store wished me merry Xmas. There are some tacky displays of reindeer, father Xmases etc in Soraya Centre, shopping mall, PP but unless you head to an expat bar you are unlikely to see much festivity.
Sianoukville will have Xmas parties in the ex-pat bars and beach restaurants. 'Gas and Surf ' on the beach should have a bit of a Spanish party and I'm sure lots of others will but if you don't feel like partying plenty of Khmer beachside joints will ignore it totally.
The only downside is hotels charge double rate for Xmas day. A bit cheeky when they don't even celebrate.

I spent last christmas in Chi Phat (a village in the jungle) and will do so again this year. No beach but can go swimming in the river. Even there not quite possible to escape completely from christmas as there was a party for the kids in the village (Cambodians like to celebrate) and I did bring out a christmas puding for my hosts!

Thanks guys for your advice and sharing your experiences, still not quite sure what we are going to yet, but this does help me to weigh up our options. Thanks again
