Bribery in Cambodia

Posted by SalParadise on 2/9/2013 at 10:55

Hi there, i'll be in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Nov. I've read some travel fish articles here about how common it is for police to ask you for some cash for no apparent reason. If this were to happen, is it advisable to just give them some cash? if so how much?

it sounds slightly ridiculous,

Well it's never for no particular reason so don't worry but if you are planning to drive a motorbike you might be stopped for some trivial offence (like not having a licence :-) ) and it'll cost you a massive $2 or $3 unless you flash a wallet with a wad of cash and then greed is sure to kick in. The Khmer police are pretty laid back. The negative side of this is if you get in any sort of trouble don't expect them to get off their backsides to help. Unless of course you are willing to pay.
