Meet people in Siem Reap.

Posted by Lorena86 on 30/3/2014 at 12:03

Hi,

I am a girl in my late twenties, and will be traveling alone to Thailand-Cambodia on early June. For the first leg of my trip I am thinking on staying on Siem Reap for a week or so, visiting temples, daytrips, etc.
Any recommendations on a guesthouse/hotel that will allow me to meet people? I don't want to stay in a 20+ bed hostel, but I also don't want to stay on a place where I won't meet anybody, or a place for couples&families.

Thanks in advance!!

I've stayed at the Jasmine Lodge several times.
Good meals, great staff and inexpensive rooms.
A single with private bath, wifi, aircon, TV and breakfast is under 15$
The staff is happy to help you organize anything.

Jasmine is definitely a good place to meet people. They get a lot of 'voluntourists' staying there who tend to be in SR for longer periods than many other tourists. Expect to meet opinionated people who 'know' a lot about Cambodia :P Their hearts are usually in the right place though...

One downside to Jasmine is it's a little out of the way (12-15 mins walk to tourist centre), but it is quite a nice walk. You can easily get a tuktuk there for a dollar, and it's probably a good idea to use this option if you're going back alone at night.

"I thought one could learn everything there is to know about Cambodia during a 2 week house building stint"

Hey I was in Cambodia for eight days, is that close enough?

"Expect to meet opinionated people who 'know' a lot about Cambodia."

I had this experience here in Mukdahan with a couple of backpackers who had been in country for less than a month and were trying to tell me what's what when I'd been living here for years. It was comical. One even said to me "Well, I read in Lonely planet..."

8 Days?? What took you so long man?
I was schooled by a few backpackers on Pub Street over a beer.
Sadly this happens too much... a few years back in Java - get sat down by some 20 year old spending mom's money, on his first solo who can't speak a lick of Bahasa...
Uhh...ya...thanks dude!...moving along...

Also Charlies bar is a great place to meet expats. Angkor Wat bar is a good club where you will meet backpackers and young travelers.
