Hi there,

I am looking to travel as above and hoping someone might have some recent info & advice. My questions are:

Are all buses to Ha Tien via Rach Gia or is there a direct line?
What is the current cost & travel time?
I will be travelling with my 10 year old son, is Ha Tien or Rach Gia a better place to over night before crossing the border? Or is it feasible to push on over the border and get to Kampot in a day?
I was thinking of hiring a moto for crossing the border and transfer to Kampot. Thoughts on this and does anyone have guide to what the cost might be?

Thanks all

You should be able to do it in one day but it will be a long one. With a 10 year old I would opt for a night in Ha Tien . As far as I know all buses pass through Rach Gia .
You could spend the night in Rach Gia but it is completely different from Ha Tien. Rach Gia is a huge bustling town/city with few english speaking people but with a very genuine Vietnamese feel (for better or worse). Ha Tien is far more quiet and laid back. Even pleasant for a little stroll and some semi interesting stuff to do.

Best is to book a ticket to Kampot from a hotel or agency in Ha Tien (or Rach Gia). Not sure what the current price is but think in the $10-20 range. That is far better than trying it yourself because once you've crossed the border by moto you will find yourself in a small border village without decent public transport. The only thing left is to haggle with a tuk tuk driver but you won't have a position of strength because everyone knows he's your only option of getting you to Kampot/Kep. It's not worth the trouble doing it yourself. Especially with a child in tow.

Thanks Eastwest - Ha Tien sounds like the go then. Are there Moto riders that will take you on their bike all the way through from Ha Tien?

Hi michien - Ha Tien is indeed the place to break your travel from Can Tho to Kampot. We took a phung trang coach to Rach Gia and then a smaller local bus from the bus station for the hop to Ha Tien. Had a pleasant arvo and evening strolling the town and sorting out the onward travel from an agent near the market. There are motos that will take you - its just as easy to share a ride in a small van as we did.

Just to add to what I said above, the motos generally will take you over the border to the dodgy casino town and you'll be on your own devices as eastwest suggests. Not sure if there is an option to take moto further so a van ride secured through agent in Ha Tien is prob going to be it. Sorry to confuse.

All clear 1-2-3. I will do as you suggest and orgaise a a minibus, I think. Assume they will stop in Kep as I think we will stay there initially at least.
