Ah sorry, I thought i had tagged it to our original route.

After travelling nth-sth Vietnam, our sort of end destination will be Huay xai in northern Laos.
So we have around 2/3 weeks to get there from leaving Cambodia. But b4 that.....
Coming from HCMC, we thought PP next then Battam and up to Siem. From there somehow up to Dong Khong and the islands. Then up Laos...
Our route will go str8 up Laos via Pakse and up to Thaek and hire a bike to "do the loop".

Our trip thru southern Cambodia is very fluid at the mo. Obviously we will want to take the easiest/nicest/scenic route. The boat from Battam to Siem for instance sounds fun.

We are sort of doing the Mekong route shown in the Lonely planet guidebook of Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos and Nth Vietnam.

you can easily get to Stung Treng from Siem Reap and then on to the islands - can book all the way and do in a day. From there it is simply just a case of deciding where you want to break the journey on the way up - pakse is a good choice (do not miss Champasak)

"you can easily get to Stung Treng from Siem Reap and then on to the islands - can book all the way and do in a day."

Yes, about 23 hours, which is technically a day. And if you do this in a 24 hour period, you are insane or masochist.

So - don't to it in a day.Personally I would go to PP, spend the evening. Then to Stung Treng, spend the evening. The on into Laos. That at least gives you evenings to relax and enjoy a meal.

Thanks for your insight, but I'm not you! I'll do my trip my way, with transport youve never heard off that takes 1/4 of the time you state.

If you can make it to 4,000 Islands from Siem Reap in 6 hours, you post how you did it here. Because a lot of people will want to know how to do that.

Have you used it yet? They got a web site, but I'd be curious what route they are following. A quick glance at the map and they are covering almost the same distance from Bangkok to Siem Reap and to Dhon Det - and the roads are not comparable. I'll be curious if they live up to their billing. They're advertising movement way faster than everyone else.

I checked out the entire website. They had a route listed. Looks like a new road has been completed. Still seems fast given the environment and I didn't see cost listed. Still, 7 hours is tolerable. Post up and let everyone know how it is.

To do that route in six hours, they have to be taking the northern road that skips Kompong Thom, Phnom Penh &co and skirts south of Preah Vihear etc. It was still a dirt trail only passable (sensibly) by motorbike when I was in Cambodia a couple of years ago. So maybe they have finished it -- or maybe not lol.

Report back on how you go.

Thanks

Hello i want to add more info about the company AVT Asia Van Transfer which does the route siem reap to don det 4000 islands..they also go to preah vihear city, stung treng, kratie, and banloung.
They have a website , very easy and handy to book.... www.asiavantransfer.com they also have fbook page.

They only use 12 passenger in the mini van, and they are a reliable company, they use the new route 64km which has been finished 14 months ago, and is brand new asfalt, so they are capable to connect siem reap and stung treng in just 5 hours of a nice trip..and then from stung treng they can transfer you either to don det, 4000 islands and border of laos, and to banloung or kratie.

Thanks..i hope this information is the one somebody was asking before..

After travelling down the length of VT, we are sort of/maybe/most likely going to be looking at some quiet and peacefull island for a weeks beachbum time after HCMC. then up to PP then Battam, boat to SR. But still not too sure if we will go back to PP , then up to the 4000 island region. But as we aren't off until early Oct, have plenty of time to firm up a planned route...
Its the quiet island we aren't sure off at this time.

I traveled with AVT today from Siem Reap to Kratie . The road is indeed completely paved until Steng Trung - to Kratie there were only a few parts unpaved. However, the guy charged the incredible amount of 25 US-Dollar - for an ok mini van to Steng Trung and then I had to change to a quite rundown local van with DVD-recording blazing all over the van and the driver operating his mobile very often while looking at it instead of at the traffic and then he 'forgot' to hand me my bag in Kratie - fortunately he had to stop after 50 m for the next passenger so I got my bag. We left SR at 8 a.m. and arrived at Stung Treng at about 12.30 and the other continued then to the 4000 island and I arrived at Kratie at about 3 p.m.
Hope this helps!? From Kratie back to SR I for sure will take another more reasonably priced company!
