A new trek on offer in Virachey

Posted by gregmccann1 on 28/9/2015 at 10:11

The Virachey National Park staff has created a new trek to the little known Mera Mountain-Yak Yeuk Grasslands area up near the Lao border. This trek begins in Voen Sai district in a Kavet village on the O Lai Lai River and takes you up to the border mountains where only one tour group has ever been (that group consisting of myself and birder Howie Nielsen in 2013). If you want to get way off the beaten path with incredible local guides who know all the stories, all the trails, all the animals, and can provide all the rice wine you can drink, then this adventure is for you. Takes about 7 days, and if you're up for it you can check on the camera-traps that are up there as part of a wildlife survey and in doing so contribute directly to conservation in VNP. I've created a new blog with info about the trek: Mera Mountain Trek.

Listen to an audio recording of a Kavet highlander in Virachey National Park tell his harrowing account of an encounter with a "Tek Tek" or Indochinese Sasquatch deep inside the Park a few years back. Even if you don't understand the Kavet language this is worth listening to, especially when he imitates the call of the Cambodian Bigfoot...!
