Hi all, new to this forum and also to solo backpacking so please excuse anything newbie.
Have 10 weeks in SE Asia from 11th June 2013 - 19th Aug 2013, very soon ! Currently planning my route through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam Cambodia, Thailand in that order. Flying from the UK.
Planning to get my visa for Vietnam done in the UK in advance to minimize any problems. So here is a quick draft of my first half of my itinerary to get a rough date of arrival into Vietnam. Please feel free to critique/ add more detail in regards to modes of transport etc. if possible. Just want to know if the dates are good/ realistic?
11th June(14:15pm) - LHR to BKK
12th (12:25pm) - 16th June - BKK
16th - 17th June - Overnight train to Chiang Mai
17th - 22th June - Chiang Mai
23rd - 26th June - Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang (slow boat?)
MUST EXIT THAILAND BY 10th JULY (30 day visa until 12th July)
26th June - 2nd July -Luang Prabang
2nd July - Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng
3rd - 4th July - Vang Vieng
4th July - Vang Vieng to Vientiane
5th - 6th July - Vientiane
7th July - Fly Vientiane to Hanoi?
Still planning the rest, also for proof of onward travel out of Thailand (flight is BKK return) will any cheap air ticket out of Thailand suffice?

Really no need for an advance Vietnam visa, the VOA process works very very well and is cheaper. Just show the Visa Approval Letter to your air carrier (into Hanoi) and you'll be fine. I've used the VOA 5 times with success. I was very impressed with Lao Airlines, but Vientaine did not impress very much at all. You can buy your VOA letter here (this agent is a good friend of mine).
