Travel advice needed --- travel overland from Java to Bali

Posted by travelinchen on 28/6/2011 at 21:49

Hi guys,

so, we have a good idea of when and where to go in Bali, but there is still one week which we haven't really decided on yet and it would be great to hear your opinion on what's realistic here.

Between our departure from Yogya (after we've seen Bromodur and Prambanan) and before our planned arrival in Ubud we've got seven or eight nights to get from Yoyga to Ubud, obviously with stops en route.

But since we travel overland, what would be the best Itinerary for the seven nights (eight days)? We'd much prefer to travel by train, but a comfortable bus (not overnight though) would be fine too. Of course, we'd really like to do the Mt. Bromo trip, but I guess there's more than enough time to do more than this?

One thought was to travel from Yogya to Solo by train, stay there for two nights, then take the train to Malang, again two nights stay (one day travel to Batu if possible?), then from malang to Mt. Bromo (maybe a tour? driver and car? two nights?), from there to Ijen Crater, two nights around there and then head over to Bali (add 2 nights on the way?)
But of course that's way more than seven nights, so do you have any suggestions on how to best cut the itinerary, in particular since we don't want to feel rushed all the time.

Your help would be very much appreciated!

I'm in Yogya at the moment and have been here for 5 days and have a good feeling for the best option here as everyone else that visit yogya is doing something similar to you. Doing Bromo and Ijen from here is a 2 night 3 day trip. A good idea from there would be to simply catch the ferry across to bali, a bus to pemuteran and stay there at least 2 nights so you can trek in the west bali national park and snorkel/dive on Pulau Menjangan. After you're done there, you'd catch a bus to lovina where you'd spend 2 nights again...come here to see some dolphins and that's about it. Then from here, catch the tourist shuttle to Ubud. Easy. That would work perfectly. If you were having a great time in Pemuteran, it'd be no big deal if you HAD to skip lovina.
