Posted by jane_135 on 22/1/2014 at 15:03

Hello travellers! I´m going to spend 22 days free in Indonesia in August. I chose Indonesia for the culture shock, landscapes and temples (I love photography) and climate that month.

After reading a few guides, itineraries, journals and forums, I think three weeks is very shoooooooooooort...I get this route:

26 July Jakarta - Borneo (flight 9:10 o 15:15)

27 July Borneo (Tanjung Puting)

28 July Borneo (Tanjung Puting)

29 July Borneo - Semarang (flight 11:45) - Yogyakarta (flight 16:50)

30 July Yogyakarta - Borobudur - Prambanan

31 July Yogyakarta - Borobudur - Prambanan (*may be this day could be for Sulawesi)

1 August Yogyakarta - Sulawesi(Makassar) (flight 06:00) - Rantenpao

2 August Sulawesi Tana Toraja

3 August Sulawesi Tana Toraja

4 August Sulawesi Tana Toraja

5 August Sulawesi(Rantenpao) - Makassar - Surabaya (flight 17:35) - Probolinggo

6 August Probolinggo - Bromo - Bondowoso

7 August Bondowoso - Ijen (*may be this day could be for Bali)

8 August Ijen - Bali (Ubud)

9 August Bali (Ubud)

10 August Bali (Ubud)

11 August Bali

12 August Bali

13 August Bali - Lombok (flight 11:25)

14 August Lombok

15 August Lombok

16 August Lombok - Jakarta (flight 14:20)

May You could help me to define and clarify my route or tell me other options.

Thanks in advance!

I don't like spending more than 3-4 days in one location. I think you will be fine.
Open up Google Earth or some other map program and draw it out.
Don't forget to include travel time in your itinerary.
I noticed you bounced around a bit.
I'd go Jakarta -> Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi, Lombok, Bali then travel east across Jawa (Java) hitting Yogya and Semarang.

I think it's very ambitious. The start of the trip falls at Lebaran (end of Ramadan), which will mean chaos in terms of transport, which could be the first big problem. Unfortunately, Pangkalan Bun (The airport giving access to Tanjung Puting in Borneo) has no flights to Sulawesi, which means she would have to backtrack to Java. Otherwise doing those two islands together would be a good idea. Also, it could be risky trying to get from Tana Toraja to Makassar for an evening flight at this time of year. I'd say overnight at Makassar for an early flight.

I personally think there's too many Islands here to really enjoy this trip. Otherwise, you could be stuck in a transport induced nightmare. I'd recommend cutting down on one of Borneo or Sulawesi and dedicating the extra days to the other Islands your visiting. I know it sucks but Indonesia is so big and the transport is so unwieldy. Good luck.
