Visa problems!

Posted by aimeebills4 on 27/8/2015 at 21:18

Hi there,

Just thought I'd make people aware of the visa problems I faced when I arrived in Lombok from Malaysia...

We arrived in Lombok at around 9pm (last arrival of the day), where anyone of Western appearance was sent to a seperate window to pay for a visa. Despite knowing full well we didn't have to pay (my friend arrived on an afternoon flight 4 days earlier and didn't have to) we were forced to pay £25 each for a visa. When we refused the staff said we wouldn't be allowed to enter the country if we didn't. We were also told free visa only applies in Bali - which we know isn't true.

Just wondering if anyone else has faced this?

That's correct - there is no visa-free-arrival at Lombok - so you were not being scammed. More information on the insanely crazy rules at the moment here.

So that is odd your friend was allowed entry without a visa.

"We were also told free visa only applies in Bali - which we know isn't true."

I remember being in similar situations in southeast Asia, particularly when I was much younger and less experienced as a traveler, when I just knew that what I was being told wasn't true - only to find out later that it was true and I was wrong. If you think this convoluted free visa policy is difficult for western travelers, imagine being the poor visa officer on Lombok who has to confront red-faced tourists every day because of this policy. But even if it is convoluted and doesn't necessarily make sense, at least it is well defined so travelers can plan accordingly.
