TIP: best beach vacation in Indonesia in late october?

Posted by andrea812 on 17/5/2016 at 11:20

Hey everyone!

we are a couple with a 5 year old kid and we're considering coming to Indonesia for our vacation.
the period is october 13 to november 3, or october 20 to november 10

what island/place has the best weather?
what island/beach would you suggest?

we like clear calm waters with tropical fish, good snorkeling off the beach, backpacker bungalow accomodation, little villages with a few stores and restaurants/street food (as opposed to all inclusive vacations where you always eat in the same place you sleep), other nice beaches at walking distance, maybe some easy trekking.

As a family, we've been to Ko Lipe in Thailand and it was great.
we could definitely do with a less crowded place, but not with a more busy, touristic place.
and it has to be cheap, of course.

After some research, I guess Gili Meno is the option that suits all our needs best, but Indonesia has so many islands so I want to hear from you.

Hi, I've travelled to the Gili's a number of times with our family, just back from a two week trip kids now 11 and 8. Having spent time over the last few years on all the islands, Gili Meno is the quietest, but it has more of a couples vibe. I'd be looking at Gili Air. It has great snorkelling off the beach, good accomodation options, without the party vibe of Gili Trawagan. The area around Coral Beach is the best snorkelling straight off the beach. There are a few accomodation options around there, plus it's easily walkable to the main part of town for other eating options. It's also easily walkable to the main tip of the islands for Sunsets. The other side of the island has almost no water on the reef at low tide.

Yes Gili Meno or Gili Air are both decent family options. Other islands worth considering are Nusa Lembongan (off of Bali) Kanawa Island (in Flores, accommodation is rustic and overpriced, but the offbeach snorkelling is fab. though no villages or anything, so maybe scratch that.)

Another option could be Gili Gede is in Southern Lombok, more rustic, a couple of villages and some good spots to do snorkelling boat trips to (though the house reef is borked).

Regardless of which you choose, expect some rain at that time of year.

Thanks everyone!

Komodo park and surroundings sound great, especially since our kid is really fond of animals and reptiles and such, but your accomodation review of Kanawa and Seraya wasn't very encouraging...

how about places in Sulawesi or in Maluku? Sounds like october is one of the best months to go there. Any places to suggest that may suit us? Togean (Ampana has an airport now...)? Banda? Kai?

Also, we will be there for almost a month, we just added one week, so we are ok with seeing maybe a few places instead of just one.
