3 weeks in Japan over Xmas and New Years

Moshi Moshi!

So we're off to Japan over Xmas and New Years (mid December to mid Jan), flying in and out through Tokyo. I haven't been to Japan in 35 years, so my know how is a little out of date ;-)

Any tips from those who have been there? We'll be travelling with two kids (8 & 9) and am thinking of covering perhaps a half dozen destinations in all. Suggestions so far have included Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Miyajima and Yuzawa - which are all at the moment just a jumble in my head!

Looking for suggestions on places a little more obscure - happy to see the tourist hot spots, but also something a little more sedate. Transport wise everyone says a railpass is the way to go... and that it will be bloody cold.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

hey, japan in winter, sounds wonderful... i last visited in sept 2012 and travelled south from osaka/kyoto to kyushu (plenty of interesting places to visit), where i spent some time. given i've never travelled in winter, i really couldn't recommend any places... with jr-passes, although convenient, i found it cheaper to book individual trains/buses than buying a pass, the main problem with the passes is they are valid for consecutive days travel, not the number of days you actually want to travel (perhaps this has changed?), so can end up quite expensive if you choose to spend some time in one place and not always be on the move (perhaps a combination of a jr pass and individual options could work for you)... there is an excellent transport website called hyerdia, it will become your friend. obviously, accommodation will be expensive, but the real hassle is the silly check-in and check-out times... onsen's in winter will be magic!

Thanks - yes the rail pass is expensive, but I think we will be doing a lot of rail travel. Like you say is a shame it is foe consecutive days of travel - reminds me of Eurailing and getting a train to wherever just as was cheaper than a bed!

The cold should be interesting! looks beautiful in the snow though.
