Chiang Mai ---> Luang Prabang Flight

Posted by walkingtrees on 8/7/2010 at 22:55

Hi guys

I'm hoping to catch a flight from CM to LP mid August. Can some folks who have done this offer up any advice? I hoping that I can book the ticket just a few days before leaving while in CM. Is this do-able? I plan and spending some time in the CM area before Laos but don't want to be locked in a set itineary weeks before my trip has even started. Then again, I want to catch that flight...

Any help?

Thanks!

There is a daily scheduled flight from C. Mai to L. Prabang by Lao Airlines that departs at around 14:15 each afternoon. You can easily buy tickets at most travel agents in C. Mai for around $150 one way which includes departure tax. There is no other airline flying this route. I've heard rumors that they may not be flying every day now during the very slow season and aftermath of Thailand's troubles but think and hope they will be back on a daily basis in August. It's less than a 2 hour flight.

I caught this flight last December. I had pre-booked some time before. The flight was about a quarter full, which would suggest you would be OK waiting to book nearer the time. But, of course, you can never be sure.

Thanks for the info. Should I buy a ticket directly at the airport or can anyone recommend a
reputable travel agent in CM?

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Lao Airlines office in Chiang Mai is just off the Huay Kaew road northwest of the old city opposite the big Shell fuel station. But just about any agent in town can do the one-way for about 4800b. http://www.flickr.com/photos/captain-bob/4365033302/sizes/l/
