Motorcycle in the rain?

Posted by elizydizy on 21/6/2011 at 07:14

I would like to motorcycle from the north of Laos to the border of Cambodia during the rainy season. How are the roads? Is it possible?

Most main routes are paved but with the usual potholes now and then. Road conditions change with seasons, heavy trucks make more holes and landslides during heavy rains can block the way occasionally. Check specific routes if anywhere off the beaten path, but rte 13 from Oudomxai all the way south is pretty reliable. If it's a smaller 125cc don't try to do more than about 300km/day as you'll probably average around 30-40kph. Needless to say have wet weather gear at the ready as rains can arrive suddenly and hard. I've biked the north for weeks at a time in "wet season" though and had mostly good weather, luck of the draw. Simple repairs are usually easy to find with some kind of mechanic in most villages, but doesn't hurt to have a tire patch kit and small foot pump for middle of nowhere situations. Assuming you have paperwork for the bike (owner) should be no prob taking to to Cambo.
