From Kunming, China to Luang Namtha

Posted by kcombobulate on 13/5/2015 at 06:01

Hi,

I would like to make a trip down from Kunming, China to Luang Namtha.

Could someone advise me on the bus route and where can I find information?

Would it be better to take an overnight or day bus?

Thanks!

You should probably consider doing this over two days and going to Jinghong first and then catching a bus directly to Luang Namtha. I don't know if there are daily buses from Kunming there, as I've heard the ones directly to Luang Prabang don't always run because of lack of passengers, and that would be a busier route. If a bus does exist, it would be about 18-20 hours including the border crossing, so you would be looking at a night bus regardless... I did Udomxai to Jinghong earlier this year and it took about 8 hours just for that leg.

Buses from JingHong to LN however run daily, so heading there first for a night would save you some stress. hundreds of buses per day from Kunming to JingHong. Also lots of cool stuff to see down in XishuangBanna.
