On March 31, the US Embassy has elevated its warning to now include what is commonly referred to as "the new road" between Kasi and Luang Prabang . This means that both roads connecting the towns of Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng are now subject to Embassy travel restrictions.

Does anyone know what the motives of the bandits is? We are meant to be cycling from Vientiane to Luang Prabang next week. I guess official lines will be don't do it, but no idea how else to get there. Don't think we can get on a plane with out bike (a tandem).
Any ideas of advice?
Thanks

All signs point to the targeting of Chinese nationals.

The bus was from Kunming and would have clearly been from China. There is no official information but the fact is, China's business presence has rapidly grown in the country in the last decade -- agriculture, timber, wildlife, land, water, dams, hydroelectricity. The word "exploitation" comes to mind.

If you're in Vientiane , stop by the Lao Airlines office and ask in person if your bicycle can be brought as checked baggage or cargo. Or you can try your luck and email them a photo of your bicycle. Most Vientiane - Luang Prabang bus companies also do cargo. You can put it on the bus, you can fly, then pick it up at the bus station in Luang Prabang.

Hope this helps.
