SIM card in Laos

Posted by JeremyNicholl on 27/11/2016 at 23:14

I'll arrive Laos in a couple of days and assume I'll need to change the Thai SIM card I'be been using in my iphone. Does anyone know the best Laotian SIM card to use and how to get one, preferably in Huay Xai, which will be my first stop in Laos?

Hi JeremyNicholl,

I use Lao Telecom (M-Phone) as I find the service decent across the country and 4G works good in the towns/cities. Top up cards can be bought in most mom-and-pop convenience shops in all villages

Other brands include ETL and Beeline. Feedback from friends on ETL is good as well.

This information will be helpful for anyone getting a Lao Telecom (M-Phone) sim card and want internet. It's more cost effective to add a data package.

Once you purchase a Lao Telecom sim card, and top up money using a scratch card (sold in increments such as 10,000 kip, 25,000 kip, 50,000 kip and 100,000 kip...follow the instructions on the scratch card to add to phone), you can add a 4G data package.

As of December 2016, they are (code/price/data/period):

*118*1# / 5,000 kip (125 MB) / 1 day

*118*2# / 10,000 kip (250 MB) / 30 days

*118*3# / 50,000 kip (1,250 MB) / 30 days

*118*4# / 100,000 kip (2,500 MB) / 30 days

If you're in Luang Prabang, if you buy a sim at Dara Market and they can help you register/set it up and add the desired package, though the vendors are Chinese and it can be hard to communicate as they don't speak much English or Lao. Alternatively you can go to the Lao Tel office during business hours, it's near Naviengkham market at Route 13, across from Kiridara Hotel, but it's a bit out of town.
