No more boat travel between Nong Kiaow and Muang Khua

Very sad to see the rough between Nong Kiaow and Muang Khua being cancelled thanks to yet another dam in Laos.

"Eliminating the popular Nam Ou river cruises will disappoint many tourists, as the boats provide the best way to experience the natural beauty of northern Laos from a relaxing river perspective. These trips will now be replaced by bus transports, following a road that weaves through valleys, occasionally skirting the river, but in places forced by the terrain to make wide diversions.

Navigation limitations between Nong Khiaw and Luang Prabang will also reduce other cruise options. It will disrupt trips that pass near Done Nguen on the downstream journey to Luang Prabang via the Pak Ou caves. The caves are on the banks of the Mekong River almost directly opposite the mouth of the Nam Ou."

Looks like the boat operators decided to take matters into their own hands and boat travel between Muang Khua and Muang Ngoi is still possible with a transfer at the dam - following quote from another forum for a boat trip taken Dec. 20th or 21st - "Yes, it is still possible to go to Muang Ngoi from Muang Khua by boat. It leaves around 9.30. Ticket sale starts at 9... but I waited for more people to join so it was cheaper. After about 3 hours we were at the dam and had to go out of the boat. Trucks brought us to a point just after the dam where we entered another boat (the one arriving from Muang Ngoi). And then it is one hour through spectacular scenery to Muang Ngoi."
