Vientiane, Laos/Nong Khai, Thailand visa run

Posted by goodmclean on 1/2/2019 at 22:51

We will be travelling through Laos for 8 weeks in April/May/June so will need to do a border run to re do our visas.

Can we cross from Vientiane into Nong Khai and literally turn around straight away and come back through? Has anyone done this recently and can confirm that it is ok?

We are a family of 5 (Mum, Dad, 11, 9, 7) and don’t really want to spend the night in Nong Khai if we don’t have to. We would be happy having lunch or wandering around for a while in Nong Khai if that is what is recommended. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you can cross the bridge to Nong Khai, stamp into Thailand, then turn around same day back to Laos for another 30-day VOA. Good to have $USD for Lao visa ($30-40 for most nationalities).

You can renew your tourist visa for another 30 days in Laos without leaving. Visa can be extended at an immigration office. There are visa extension offices in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Savannakhet and Pakse..or can be done by travel agents anywhere in Laos for a small fee. It costs US$2 per day if you apply before the expiry date. If you wait until your visa expires, you have to pay US$10 per days for the days you overstayed. https://theculturetrip.com/asia/laos/articles/how-to-apply-for-and-renew-your-visa-in-laos/
