BKK to Tham Kong Lor cave

Posted by odo on 18/7/2019 at 14:49

I want to head off immediately to visit the TKL cave & Tad Saman waterfall after flying in to BKK. Trying to work out the best route.

Fly to Ventianne & then bus direct to the cave village & arrange a cave visit with a guesthouse or is it a better way to fly across Thailand? Fly to Nakon Thanom then ferry to Thakhek and arrange travel to cave village from there? Seems a long way off to be based in Thakhek.

Hi odo,
Travellers usually choose to jump off from Tha Khaek so they can do the Tha Khaek Loop by motorbike, which includes Konglor Cave. If you want to do the Tha Khaek Loop (and have no desire to linger in Vientiane and want to bypass it), bus or fly from Bangkok to Nakhon Phanom and cross the border into Thakhaek where motorbike rentals are available.

Alternatively, you can go to Konglor via Vientiane using local bus.
Bangkok to Vientiane:
a) fly
b) overnight train
c) or fly to Udon Thani and then cross the land border into Vientiane -- some choose to do this because it can be cheaper than flying direct, but obviously requires a lot more effort

Then take the bus from Vientiane to Konglor village. You don't need to arrange trip to the cave through a guesthouse, you just show up to the boat station.

Tad Saman is in Na Hin, en route to Kong Lor. So it is up to you whether you stop on the way there, or make the stop on the way out. Hiking the falls would likely require an overnight stop in Na Hin.

Hope this helps.
