Have read somewhere on the message board (can't find it now) rough time for travel from Chiang Mai to Huay Xai (poss 5 hours by bus?) I remember that if you leave early in the morning should be able to make Huay Xai without having to overnight in Chiang Khong.
Have to be at Si Phan Don on a definite date - end of visa, want to participate in Gibbon experience as soon as we arrive in Laos - don't want to waste any of the 30 day visa hanging around unnecessarily. As GE is an early start would prefer to overnight in Huay Xai.

If you take a look at this trip planner you'll see we've listed Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong at 6 hours. That being the case you should be able to easily do it in a day, though I'd suggest leaving CM early to be sure you get across the border...delays do happen!
Sounds like you've got a pretty good Laos trip planned -- don't forget a pillow for all those bumpy rides ;-)

Advice from the friendly Maleewan at Baanrimtaling that it is faster to take bus to Chiang Rai then bus to Chiang Khong, than to take Chiang Mai - Chiang Khong bus as the journey is longer. 7-8 hours rather than the 6 hours you suggest.
